I havent written in a long time, but just now I had a quite interesting journey from Berlin to England that I wanted to write about.. So continue below....
when arriving ath the berlin beach camp i had a rather unpleasant surprise. I was talking to roland, the guy i was planning to travel back by plane. talking to him I discovered, that I actually didnt book my flight on monday like i assumed the whole time but instead on tuesday the day after.
meanwhile i had planned a trip to england for a week, exactly starting on that monday. so i had to somehow get home to kaiserslautern.
lacking other alternatives i decided to hichhike back starting sunday night.
after a really great day in berlin with some newly made friends i set off around one o'clock at night.
just outside the BBC i missed the last tram that could take me to the place i start hichhiking whenever i normally leave berlin that way.
but i was lucky to find a bunch of really nice polish people who just set out to back to poland. they took me with them.
after stopping at a lake to have a small picnic at the Grunauer See, we left for the highway. unfortunately when we got on the highway we were already past the highway petrol station. so i kept going with them till shortly before the polish border at Frankfurt Oder, where there was a good place to start my way back.
actually, after just 15 min i found someone to take me. he was going to london and was offering to take me the whole way. but i simply hadnt the cloth and stuff I would need, because i was already camping on the beach for three days and sand was everywhere.
anyways, i had an interesting trip with him, whenever possible going really fast at 220 km an hour or even more. because he was going so fast, i decided to take another route home, over osnabrück in north west germany.
talking to him about my trip he actually offered me to lend me a car when I actually got to england so afterwards i could help him get it back to rotterdam the week after.
more about that later.
it took several hours to cross the whole breath of northern germany.
around osnabrück i then found a very interesting ride, a 1960s dune buggy someone just had driven to germany all the way from sweden. because it was open to all sides it was rather cold, even when the sun was already high in the blue cloudless sky.
anyways, around cologne we parted and i got another ride till about trier and there to where i needed to go. but it took longer than i had expected and when i finally arrived in kaiserslautern, it was already rather late.
I than had a real quick shower and threw what i needed into my bag and set of to the train station to catch the train that would take me to the transfer bus to the airport london hahn.
although, when i than arrived at the platform my train was supposed to leave from there was a rather unusual announcement. the whole trainstation had to be evacuated because of some reason. the police guided everything to the outside. no train could then enter or leave the station.
the pest guess we could make at that time was that some looney had calles and made a bomb threat. to clear the situation it at least would need several hours.
so, how was i supposed to get to the airport to catch my plane?
i phoned my brother, who had to drive all the way to kaiserslautern, about 40 km and had him drive me.to the airport.
the time was already running out, but we finally made it only about 20 min before the time the plane would start. barely i made it through customs and security but then finally got to london stanstead like planned.
there i was already greeted by my grandaunt fanny, who now takes really good great care of me...!
to tell more bout what happened to me when i arrived here...
when I arrived at london stanstead, my grand aunt picked me up and we drove home to her home in west horsely south of london together. it was already late and after dinner we just chatted for a while and it was already time to go to bed.
the next day we set out for an excursion. the weather was lovely and we went to walk in the forest to see many flowers and a lake. its just about the perfect time to be outside and enjoy spring.
as my grand aunt is very active in a local project to revive a canal between the two rivers way and arun, she of course had to take me there and we had a nice walk along the water.
i really enjoyed being in the british countryside because there are quite a few differences from what we have in germany.
roads for example are called "sunken roads" because very often they sunk under the level of the surrounding ground by centuries of traffic, together with high trees and bushes making for a great green tunnel dimly illuminated by the few sunrays that get through the thick vegetation.
what I also find funny is my reaction towards left side traffic on the road. i still cant help it, but my stomach kind of contracts when cars speed towards yours and are simply on the wrong side of the road.
anyways, the reason i visited my grand aunt is not only that I wanted to go on excursions with her but also to learn more about her and my family.
she has a great archive with pictures of our ancestors and it was really fascinating to learn more about that side of my family.
one particularly interesting part was a diary from 1873 by one of our family members who, at the age of 25, came from to london at that time to help building a gasfactory. she had actually made the effort to retrace some of his steps and find out about the places and activities that he is writing about and collect information and pictures.
after two days of great hospitality I then set out to leicester to visit my friend Kyo.
that morning i also phoned the polish guy, who had asked wether I could take care of his car, but unfortunately the car still needs some fixing and cant be used before next week.
so at the moment I am in the train to leicester and am looking forward to whatever my journey will bring.
Now is a few days later. I have been in Leicester for three days now and it has been quite nice. We rented a car to go to Nottingham and the Sherwood Forest and after that we simply had a bit of a good time here.
Today I went out to have Fish and Chips. I ordered Chips and Haddock, a big portion. What I got was huge, a giant fish and a big load of chips with lots of salt and vinegar.
It tastes quite nice, lots of fat, salty, great if you want to fill up your belly! I walked with the big box down the street and had a seat at some corner to enjoy the world and my meal. There I had a really great encounter.
Some black guy just walked down past me and seeing me he remarked: "They say its not good to eat alone, but you are one happy man!" I love this kind of things, they make the world a better place!
